Evacuation of Buildings
When a building alarm sounds, or when notified by uniformed Public Safety personnel,
- Gather all unsecured valuables and belongings if it is safe to do so.
- Follow the illuminated "EXIT" signs that lead to the nearest enclosed stairwell. Enclosed stairwells are designed to protect exiting occupants from the effects of a fire, especially smoke inhalation. If no visible smoke is present, the unenclosed main stairwells may be used.
- Enter the stairwell and follow the directional arrows and exit signs to the exit door; go directly outdoors.
- Immediately clear the Plaza area, either by descending to the perimeter road or by entering another building, which is not in alarm.
- The catwalk may be used as a pathway to another building, but not as a refuge - do not congregate in the catwalk.
Persons with Disabilities Needing Assistance
- Go to the nearest lobby phone located on every floor near the elevators if it is safe to do so. If it is not safe to do so, go to the nearest enclosed stairwell for assistance.
- Call Public Safety at 911 on campus phone or at 617-287-1212 from a cell phone.
- Describe the type of assistance you need and your location. You will receive further instructions for your evacuation.
Critical-Operations Staff
Critical-operations staff must follow the emergency plans for their units. All emergency plans for critical operations must be reviewed and approved by UMASS Boston Environmental Health and Safety. No staff member may remain in a building once an evacuation signal or order has been given without prior review and approval.
