Reporting a Crime

To report a crime on campus to UMass Boston Public Safety:

• Call 911 from a campus phone, or
• 617-287-1212 from a cell phone

When reporting a crime or suspicious behavior, provide as much information as possible, including:

• Type of criminal behavior or suspicious activity
• Location of criminal behavior or suspicious activity
• Description of person, including gender, height, weight, clothing and description of any weapons involved
•  If applicable, vehicle description (color, year, make, model, license-plate number)
• Direction of flight from scene, if noted

Do not approach or attempt to apprehend the persons involved. Take only actions necessary for self-defense. If you are safe, stay where you are until the police arrive. Otherwise, move to a safe location.

Personal safety tips

• Do not let unknown people into locked buildings or offices. 
• Always keep the door to your office locked when you are working alone.
• Do not investigate a suspicious person or noise by yourself.
• Keep a list of emergency numbers with you.
•  Always be alert and aware of your surroundings.
• Chose well-lit, heavily-traveled paths when walking at night and consider calling the Department of Public Safety at 617-287-7799 for a personal safety escort if you feel unsafe.
